CD Review: Anson Wright & Tim Gilson “Ukiah’s Lullaby”

AnsonWright” Anson Wright and Tim Gilson create a fabric of beauty, vivid colorations and intimate, intuitive offerings through each composition on Ukiah’s Lullaby…Wright’s ability to balance technical prowess with beauty is truly the pearl within this timeless recording.”
~Jeff Becker~
Jazz Sensibilities

“Clearly the guitarist and bassist have formed a symbiotic relationship and the music here is proof of that. This music also hints at a more secret snd soulful connection, one that comes from a deep love for sound.”
~Raul d’Gama Rose~
All About Jazz

“When you hear the opening lines from this duo (Anson’s guitars and bass by Tim) on the title track, you’ll realize you’re in the presence of total talent…true jazz perfection in a wonderfully relaxing set of 10 all-original tunes that will stay in your mind for months to come.”
~Rotcod Zzaj~
Improvijazzation Nation

“Two guys meant to work their magic together…it is music to be somehow absorbed rather than simply listened to. One comes away from their shared ideas and musical mesmerism with an appreciation of the delicacy of the duo. Both guys have to be at the top of their game, because there’s no place to hide. On these ten recital-quality studies of two cats deep in the shed, it all works to perfection.”
~George Fendel~
Jazzscene

“To say that Anson Wright is diversely multi-talented is like saying that the sun is hot. This true renaissance man…draws numerous comparisons to Jim Hall.”
~Pico~
Something Else Reviews

“The music in Ukiah’s Lullaby speaks eloquently for itself. The ten
original compositions from Anson and Tim range from spirited to lightly
swinging to introspective, and all of the material has direction, strong
melodic content, and heart.”
~John Stowell~

CD Review: John Keyser “Compasino”

john-keyser-compasinoAbout The Artist:

JOHN KEYSER:
John Keyser is a guitarist whose love of music stretches back to his toddler-hood. His dad’s guitar and voice on renditions of classic railroad songs, and The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” loom large in his memory, as does Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters”. Jimi Hendrix became his first big musical hero at about the time he was beginning to play electric bass as a young teen.

John gradually switched to guitar and simultaneously was drawn more and more to jazz. In college in his adopted hometown of Portland, Oregon, he examined the styles of Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian to fulfill his thesis requirement. Those players and Grant Green and so many others became new idols to John, and great Portland jazz players like Ron Steen, Ed Bennett, Dick Berk, Dan Faenhle, Tony Pacini, Dave Weinstock, and others too numerous to mention provided invaluable inspiration and musical fellowship.

Time in New York provided more great playing and listening experiences. John played upright bass in a trio with Dmitry Baevsky and Renaud Penant, and guitar in a trio with pianist John Coates, and John’s dad on bass. A bit later in his stay he earned a Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, and learned from and played with an incredible slew of folks that already were or are becoming “name-brand” cats (Jack Wilkins, Chris Rosenburg, Gary Dial, and David Liebman, to name just a few). John also met his wife, a delightful jazz singer named Yuko, with whom he works regularly in a duo or trio context.

John has been back in Portland for several years now and is part of the vibrant scene there. He is extremely proud to offer a CD packed with original compositions and guitar playing that represents a career peak. Dick Berk on drums, Ed Bennett on bass, and Tony Pacini on piano provide solos and accompaniment that are exciting, inspiring, and jazz-textbook worthy. Please check it out! - Jazzscene Magazine
