Portland needs to publicize more jazz events more often. It seems that the media (local magazines, newspapers, non-jazz radio stations), play along with selling, as Saphu rightly puts it “surrendering artistic control…in the name of selling a quota of commercially palatable products”. 35 years ago jazz drummer Elvin Jones said; “You can put a picture of garbage on an album cover, and if you know how to sell, it can sell.” Inotherwords, it’s not what we sell, but rather what we choose to sell. With so much jazz that could be sold in Portland, it’s to bad that there are people out there that don’t realize this. Not sure if this was helpful, but I will think about a solution to this on my next post. Oh, and yes, “I Saphu”…
